Stay Cool! by Linden Malki

Spring Forward this weekend! Another reminder that we've survived another winter, although in Southern California we have it easy. We did have our share of cold snaps, and rain (which we need) but now we get to deal with beautiful warm days which will become hot, edge of desert broiling.

Heat is tough on our cars as well--the internal combustion engines which are the mainstay of our daily transportation operate on the edge of disaster. They need to be up to 190-200 degrees Fahrenheit to operate with reasonable power, but beyond that the materials of which the engines are made start to do bad things. In other words, it's a compromise between efficiency and slag.
Most modern engines work at 1 bar pressure, roughly 15 pounds, which allows the coolant to resist boiling at the top of the temp range. BMW, however, has been raising their coolant pressures to 1.2 bar, 1.4 bar, and most are now up to 2 bar. The higher pressures at these temperatures put stress onto the cooling systems--we see this in the number of replacement expansion tanks we sell, as well as hoses and other cooling components. In fact, we sell more BMW reservoirs than all the other cars we deal with combined. When I get a call on a coolant reservoir, my first thought is "what kind of BMW do you have?"  There are several different designs and part numbers used on various BMW's. and we sell them all. In most cases, we can get both the original factory brand, and alternate manufacturers' replacements,  usually at a lower cost. (We do stay with manufacturers that we are familiar with and have a good service record with.)  We also have or can readily get most thermostats, coolant caps, hoses, and other related components for most of the German and other European cars. We also carry an assortment of the VW black plastic coolant connectors and housings at significant savings; we do appreciate samples as do find things on cars that are not clearly cataloged.
We also recommend the use of specific factory coolants. There are several families of chemicals which are used or not used on different cars and engines; it is not only a case of heat transfer capacity, but compatibility with the variety of increasingly complex alloys used in the engines, radiators and other components.  When we first started seeing aluminum heads on Mercedes engines some years ago, when there were not a lot different coolants supplied, I recall seeing cylinder heads we had removed for service with beads of coolant weeping through the aluminum combustion chambers like they were sponges.

We normally keep in stock the factory coolants, in original trademarked containers, for Mercedes, BMW.and Mini, in gallon jugs of concentrate. VW/Audi has just come out with a G013 coolant that they are listing for all watercooled engines, which we also have in the factory gallon jug.  We also carry Pentosin coolants that cover most European cars. We also have or can get the specific factory formula coolants for Asian vehicles as well.

Moving Sale!--from Linden Malki

We are moving our store soon-target date is August 1. Our new address will be 1139 North E Street, San Bernardino, CA 92410--just a few blocks from where we are now.
We have found some interesting stuff that needs new homes, will be posting more items as we go.
One interesting thing we have is a pair of Zenith Stromberg 150 CDSE carbs, which I believe are off of a Sunbeam Alpine GT., 1969. (We had a customer with 2, which he eventually made into 1.)
Anyone interested in them can call me at 909-889-9505 and leave a message if I can't get to the phone; or try my cell: 909-844-2202.
There are more pix available on request! Email me @ importautosbdo@juno.com

Translating the magic numbers by Linden Malki

It sounds so easy--just bring up the trouble codes for your later model car, buy the part, put it on and off you go!
Except that it doesn't work that way. Identifying the code is helpful, but it's only the first step. What the code really tells you is that the computer is getting information that is not normal from a specified area. It might actually be a major component, but it might be something as simple--and sometimes as hard to find--as a loose wire or a corroded connection or ground. It might be something else that is not triggering the target gizmo. Could be a vacuum line, or a crack in a hose. It could be a water or oil or fuel leak that is seeping onto somewhere other than where the leak actually is. It could be a loose bolt that is allowing something to be out of its proper place or alignment. It could be a bad fuse, or a bad connection in the underside of the fuse box. If a fuse is blown, that just pushes the question back to the components connected to that circuit. In other words, you're not dealing with a single cause--you're dealing with a whole system, with a varying number of places where something could be messing with the information that the computer is getting. And some cars are known for having failures in the sensors and monitoring system itself.
Many of the same problems are possible in a pre-computerized vehicle; but instead of a code to chase you are working with what appears to be a failed component. The approach is the same: before dismantling anything, check for things that are probably beyond their useful life. When you do find an obvious or suspicious defect, remember that there can always be more. Over the years, I have had techs tell me that "It's got to be this" , or "I've already done this, so it's gotta be that." My answer is always "There can always be something else wrong; it is possible to have measles and chicken pox at the same time." We just finished a job that came in with everything pointing to the carburetor. Turned out that the carb was fine, but everything that connected to the carb had something wrong—clogged vacuum lines, contamination in the fuel, bad wiring on gizmos that work off the carb. Poor carb didn't have a chance.
Familiarity helps, as well. There's always a first time we see a particular failure, but the more familiar we are with a specific car or system, the better chance that we've already been there, done that, learned something. There are some things a technician can figure out the first time, but there are other things that have odd things going on that the technical info available may give you a valuable shortcut to; or there may be things in a particular car that may be a fairly uncommon add-on that is not mentioned anywhere. We found something like that just a few days ago. The factory recommended procedure called for loosening a couple of mounting bolts in the suspension to provide clearance for the item being replaced; one of the bolts was easy, the other one turned out to be underneath a part that is part of a a rare, optional system that had to be partially dismantled to get to the bolt in question.
There isn't a computer yet that can match the one between an experienced tech's brain and fingers!

Most of our Lucas stock is original NOS; some Moss as noted.
Early Lucas packaging was red; the green boxes began to appear in 1996. This is about the point when Lucas began going through a series of corporate reorganizations and buyoffs, so red boxes are an indication of items produced in Lucas’own facilities under the original management.
